Embedded Computing Requirements Checklist
We work with several computing manufacturers as an authorized distributor. Outline your requirements, and we'll help compare options.

Plan around the hardware
Connect the physical requirements to the workload, software and timing of your project.
- Space and mounting
- Your enclosure and available space.
- Connections
- Types, quantities and required speeds.
- Installation
- Power, cooling, temperature and service access.
- Workload
- The job and performance targets.
- Software
- Operating system, application and drivers.
- Timing
- Evaluation, quantities, production and service life.
You do not need a complete specification to begin. Tell us what you’re building, what the computer needs to do, and any limits you already know, such as available space or an operating system you need to keep. We can help you compare options and get answers from the manufacturer as the design takes shape.
If you’re replacing an existing computer, include its complete manufacturer part number, configuration, and revision. For help deciding between a board, a processor module, and an enclosed system, read our platform selection guide.
The details that help us get started
- What it will do: describe the equipment and the job the computer will handle. Include performance targets or an existing system you want to compare it with.
- How it will fit into the product: you might need a board for your enclosure, a processor module with a carrier board for connections, an enclosed computer, or a panel PC with a built-in display. It’s fine to leave this undecided.
- What it will run: list the operating system and version, application software, and any required drivers or firmware. Existing software can limit which hardware is suitable.
- What it will connect to: include the number and type of connections for networks, USB devices, serial equipment, cameras, displays, storage, and expansion cards. Add required speeds where you know them.
- Where it will be installed: describe the space, mounting, power supply, surrounding temperature, cooling, and access for service. For a panel PC, include screen size and how the touch controls will be used.
- When you’ll need it: include your evaluation date, expected quantities, production start, and how long you expect to build and service the equipment.
Details that depend on the project
Using a processor module? Include the drawing or part number for the carrier board it will connect to, if you have one. Add the module standard and type, the available power, and who will develop the carrier and software. A board support package (BSP) helps the operating system work with the hardware. If the platform needs one, include who will supply and maintain it.
Working with cameras or AI? Include the number and resolution of cameras, the model or software framework, and how quickly the system needs to process information or respond. Describe the workload you’ll use to test it so the evaluation reflects your application.
Installing it in medical equipment or an area that gets washed down? Include the required standards and documentation, cleaning procedures, mounting, and whether the computer will run on batteries or mains power. The documentation for the selected model needs to cover the intended installation.
Ordering a configured system? List the memory, storage, operating system, accessories, and firmware you need. Tell us what you’d like installed before delivery and what your team plans to add. We’ll work through what the supplier can provide and what work remains for your team.
